Show Notes for Grains from Gutteridge Podcast Episode #14: The Vine and the Branches

Summary:

Grapes hanging from a vine.“I am the Vine, you are the branches.”

Of this message, Pastor Gutteridge wrote:

God is the Husbandman, the great Vine-Dresser. He intends that His children should be fruitful with ever-increasing fruitfulness, so He purges them, that they may bring forth more fruit.

But they must abide in the Vine as living branches in the Vine; and the Vine is His own well-beloved Son. This abiding means complete obedience to the Son’s commandments, and in their loving obedience, God’s children bring forth much fruit.

Breathe on Me, Breath of God!

Stained-glass image of King DavidKing David, as depicted in stained glass

Even though I’m writing this as I sit here in Costa Rica, I wanted to point out that over at our FinestOfTheWheat.org site, there’s a “new” poem/hymn this month.  (We make it a habit to present a new hymn on the first of each month in our Powerful Poetry section over there.)

Drawing from John 20:22 and Ezekiel 37:5-6, lyricist Edwin Hatch offers up a poignant prayer for the infilling of the Holy Spirit.  See the full text on its own page at Breathe on Me, Breath of God.

Since yesterday was my 44th spiritual birthday, I feel duty-bound to offer a “bonus” poem, namely, Charles Wesley’s wonderful Hymn to Be Sung on the Anniversary of One’s Conversion.  It’s a long title, but a wonderful poem — and it contains a hymn you already know, if you keep reading…

    Two More Songs Singing Me

by Jim Kerwin on October 10, 2011

    Sunday morning, 9 October 2011

    Flowers Along the Occoquan River

Flowers Along the Occoquan. (Part of worship is stopping to enjoy and give thanks for God's handiwork.)

Volunteering, as I have been, on the NationalPrayerChapel.com website over the weekend, has an unexpected perquisite—waking up each morning in Pastor Ray Greenley’s guest bedroom with a clear view of the thin golden hair of pre-dawn light silhouetting the horizon across the Occoquan River. After I’ve dressed in the dark and finished my hour of Scripture reading, I can steal off for a prayer walk along the Occoquan.

Two songs have been “singing me” me this morning.  (Those of you who have read my blog post, A Song Singing Me, will understand.)  The first song arose within my heart from the moment my eyelids popped open, and second one was triggered in my spirit by the sight of [click to continue…]

Episode 003: No “God Bag Needed” (1 John 1:3-5)

Photo of a "God bag" given as a gag gift.

The “God Bag”—a poor substitute for fellowship with the living God. (But thanks to Mark Sinclair anyhow!)

Ongoing study suggestion: Read 1 John each week (the letter has only five chapters) and the Gospel of John each month.

    Review from last week:

    • Fellowship
    • “What is man…?”
    • A “God Bag”?!

My misconception of a “God Bag”

Our Great Savior God, a message by Pastor Percy Gutteridge

Grains from Gutteridge Cover ArtIn this message titled Our Great Saviour God, Pastor Percy Gutteridge draws from Titus 2:13 and unfolds our Lord Jesus as the Great Savior God in His works of Creation. Viewing His handiwork, whether in the vastness of the multiplied millions of galaxies in the universe or in the tiniest lifeform of an amoeba, we stand in awe of His power and wisdom when we consider the Gospel’s declaration: “All things were made by Him….” [click to continue…]
