Episode #10: The Heavenly Race

Summary:

Percy Gutteridge

In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul takes as a pattern the Marathon footrace of the ancient Greeks, well known to and partly copied by the Romans. This is a stimulating message on the Heavenly Race.  Comfort and encouragement are given from the Scriptures and Christian experience. You will be surprised as to how much the epistles have to say about the Heavenly Race. This is an excellent message to listen to after you have seen the film Chariots of Fire.

Special Note:

This message was delivered as the commencement address at Living Faith Bible College in 1986.

Orpah returns as Ruth leaves with Naomi for Bethlehem Judah (from an illustration by Doré)

Starting in Ruth chapter 1 as he did in last month’s Grains from Gutteridge podcast, Pastor Gutteridge weaves in Peter’s report about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the house of Cornelius (Acts 11), and brings forth a helpful message about our adoption into God’s family.

  • Ruth 1
  • Acts 11:1-18
  • Micah 5:2
  • Ephesians 3:1-6
Hymn quoted: William Dunkerley’s In Christ There Is No East or West
In Christ there is no East or West,
In Him no South or North;
But one great fellowship of love
Throughout the whole wide earth.

    The Original Aromas of Christmas

There's a reason why nobody talks about the 'aromas' of the first Christmas!

The Aromas of Modern Christmas — Modern Luxuries

In North American culture, we associate various aromas and fragrances with Christmas — pine boughs, “chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” pumpkin pie, roasted turkey, baked ham, yams, apple pie, hot chocolate, and egg nog.

    Percy Gutteridge

One of my two fathers in the Lord, Pastor P.H.P. (“Percy”) Gutteridge, was born this day, September 26th, in 1909.  I was speaking with my friend Brian Fettes from Calgary, Alberta, today, and we both marveled that Percy has been in the presence of Jesus for thirteen years already.

Some of my readers knew Percy well; others, not at all (except perhaps through his writings found on FinestOfTheWheat.org and his audios both there and on this site in the Grains from Gutteridge podcast).  An overview of his life is told by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Ann Gutteridge, in their Brief Timeline of the Life of P.H.P. Gutteridge.  Another son, Peter, relates some humorous and poignant anecdotes in [click to continue…]

Sometimes, with the help of volunteer transcribers, we are blessed to be able to share Percy Gutteridge’s messages in written form.  So it is with the most recent message from our Grains from Gutteridge podcast.  Percy’s daughter-in-law (one might better describe her as an “adopted daughter”), Ann Gutteridge, labored long and lovingly to give us a transcript of Our Great Savior God, which Denise and I have edited and annotated.

You’ll find the article, Our Great Savior God, over at the FinestOfTheWheat.org website, where Ann also contributed another transcript for one of last year’s articles–The Supernatural Character of New Testament Christianity.
