004 Kernels of Wheat – God Is Light

Jim Kerwin's Show Notes for Kernels of Wheat Podcast
Episode 004 – God Is Light (1 John 1:5)

The revelations of God's nature in John's writings:

"God is... I AM..."
  • The “I am…” passages
  • The “God is…” passages

The “I Am” passages:

  • Exodus 3:14–“I AM THAT I AM.”
  • Jehovah/Yahweh as a derivative of the verb to be
  • I AM the Bread of Life (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51)
  • I AM the Light of the world (8:12; 9:5)
  • I AM the Door (10:7,9)
  • I AM the Good Shepherd (10:11,14; see also Psalm 23)
  • I AM the Resurrection and the Life (11:25)
  • I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life (14:6)
  • I AM the True Vine (15:1,5)
  • John 8: “I Am” by itself (ignore the he in italics) —
    • “…unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins” (v.24)
    • “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM…” (v.28)
    • “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (v.58)

The “God Is” passages:

  • “God is Spirit” (John 4:24)
  • “God is Light” (1 John 1:5)
  • “God is Love” (1 John 4:8,16)

Some key passages about God and Light (and us!):

  • 1 Timothy 6:16 — God “dwells in unapproachable light”
  • Psalm 104:1-2 — God covers Himself “with light as with a cloak”
  • John 8:12 — Jesus: “I am the Light of the world.”  Also John 9:4-5
  • John 12:35-36, 46 — “The Light is among you.  Walk while you have the light.”
  • James 1:17 — “The Father of lights”
  • Ephesians 5:7-14 — “…you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord…”
  • John 3:19-21 — “The Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light…”

Questions for the coming weeks:

  1. What does it mean to “walk in darkness”?  (1 John 1:6)
  2. What does it mean to “walk in the light”? (1 John 1:7)

For next week: Interlude—God's Historical Providence and the LXX

Thanks, Brother Roy! I’m glad these podcasts are a blessing to you. I’m trying to get two more podcasts out before I head to Eastern Europe.

I may not be looking forward to the 24-hour air marathon to get to Romania, but I’m definitely looking forward to being with you and Melania and the saints there. And it looks like the timing will be such that I can bring along a few of the almost-ready-for-print copies of The Rejected Blessing.
